Botanical Garden

Botanical Garden

Founded in 1771, the country’s oldest botanical gardens are a real ‘green island’ in Budapest’s concrete jungle. Over 6,000 plant species in the 3.1-hectare park and the greenhouses*, of a total area of some 2,000 sq m, help visitors become aware of the meaning of biodiversity. The Garden is under partial reconstruction in the course of 2009- 2010.

Hospital in the rock. Secret Military Hospital and Nuclear Bunker beneath the Buda Castle.

The tour includes parts that were built and extensively used during the Second World War and the siege of Budapest. Thousands of people, soldiers and civilians alike were treated here. This was the last hospital in operation that time in the city. During the cold war the hospital was extended and upgraded to a nuclear bunker and was classified as “Top Secret” under the codename LOSK 0101/1. It was also used during the 1956 revolution and later as a civilian defence installation. Tours depart on the hour. Last group departs at 18:00. The price includes the mandatory tourguide. A guide in Hungarian and English is always available. Audioguides available for other languages.

Although it earned fame with its stalactites, high gorge-like corridors, large differences in level and ball-like shapes eroded by hot springs are more typical. The new 500-meter long visitors’ route holds plenty of excitement. The temperature is about 11 degrees throughout the year.
