The first public transport vehicle of the Hungarian capital was the steam boat of Antal Bernhard called „Carolina, he organized a local boat line with it in 1820. On 1 July 1832 the first public transport facility, the omnibus started to operate on the streets of Pest. The first subsurface railway of the European continent, the underground was completed in 1896 and in its appearance it still recalls the atmosphere of the turn of the century. There are another two metro lines in Budapest: the other two lines connect East and West and the North and South parts of the city. The cogwheel railway is a true rarity in city transport, which climbs up to the terminus of the Children’s Railway on the Széchenyi Hill. Life does not stop at night either: over 30 bus services run in the streets of Budapest throughout the night. The HÉV services connect Budapest with the surrounding towns, but please note that the Budapest Card is valid only to the city borders. So if you want to go to Szentendre or Gödöllő, remember to purchase a supplementary HÉV ticket in one of the BKV HÉV ticket offices. (The Budapest Card is not valid on the Funicular of Buda Castle and on the Chairlift of Jánoshegy.) The Budapest Transport Company (BKV) wishes you a pleasant journey.
